According to Yonhap News,
North Gyeongsang Province said a memorandum of understanding between Pohang University of Science and Technology(Postech) and Max-Planck Gesellschaft will be concluded in the headquarters of Max-Planck Gesellschaft in Munich, Germany, on June 14th.
For the conclusion of the agreement, credit should go to the joint efforts, made since 2007, among the North Gyeongsang provincial government, the Pohang city government and Postech in working together to attract a research institute of Max-Planck, one of the best research institutes for basic science.
The research institute - which will open in August - will delve into high-tech basic science such as attosecond science(a science field that observes the atomic movements of a substance at the speed of a millionth of a millionth of a millionth of a second) and compound materials.
The MOU sketches out installation of advanced beam lines and attosecond optical equipment, exchanges of researchers, joint researches and training of new researchers.
It also includes plans of broadening the scope of the research fields and expanding its researcher pool to develop the institute into a member of Max-Planck sometime around 2015. So far, only Germany and the US have the research institute members of Max-Planck.
Kim Gwang-yong, head of the bidding committee of the research institute, said “the attraction of the research institute not only gives us a chance to develop North Gyeongsang Province into one of the world’s best cities in terms of science and technology but lays the foundation for enhancing industrial competitiveness over the mid-to-long term.”
