A school for children of foreigners living in Korea will be open in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, in August 2012.
According to Pohang City on Wednesday, the provincial office of education recently authorized a plan to construct the foreign school in the city. The school will be a modern building on a 14,446 square meter lot in a residential area of Namgu, Pohang.
The school will consist of 13 classrooms, with a capacity of seating 260 students. It will run curricula for 13 grades, the same as in the U.S., from one-year kindergarten to five-year elementary to three-year junior high to four-year senior high.
Children of foreigners are eligible to enter the school, but 30 percent or less of the maximum number of students will be allotted to Koreans who have lived abroad for three or more years.
The foreign school plan has been pushed by Pohang City and POSCO Educational Foundation.
“A foreign school is a prerequisite for a new port, free economic zone, an industrial complex as well as foreign capital inflow,” said an official of Pohang City. “It will provide a good educational environment for the children of talented foreign workers.”
