According to Yonhap News,
North Gyeongsang Province announced on July 26th that it will push forward ‘the East Sea Tourism Belt Development Project,’ which is to promote the eastern coast of Korea into a new tourist attraction.
The province has selected plans to develop the Japanese street of Guryongpo, Pohang, the snow crab street of Ganggu, Yeongdeok, and geo-tourism of Ulleung Island as leading projects. They will be carried out in earnest this year with a total investment of KRW 3.4 billion, and expanded to government projects from next year, with additional funding worth KRW 6 billion.
The Japanese street in Guryongpo is to attract Japanese tourists and promote the place into a historic education field. To that end, the residence of Japanese people during the Japanese colonial rule of Korea will be preserved and restored.
The region plans to create a theme street by repairing the remaining 47 Japanese houses by making investment worth KRW 5.1 billion.
Moreover, an observatory deck will be built with investment of KRW 1.7 billion on the snow crab street of Ganggu, Yeongdeok, which attracts 1.5 million tourists annually.
The ‘Ulleung geo-tourism’ project is to develop geological features of the volcanic island of Uleung into a tourism product. Nari basin, Seonginbong Peak, and nearby islets will be promoted into tourist attractions by investing KRW 2.6 billion by next year.
The head of the tourism development section, Kim Ju-ryeong, said “the natural environment, and historic and cultural resources of five cities and counties including Gyeongju and Uljin on the East Sea will be a broad tourism belt, focused on nature, culture, and community.
